Evidence and origin of different types of sedimentary organic matter from a Paleoproterozoic orogenic Au deposit

•Unique combination of advanced analyses distinguished two types of sedimentary carbonaceous material in orogenic Au deposit.•CMker was ubiquitous, graphitic-like kerogen typical of high metamorphic conditions.•CMfd was an amorphous, PAH rich, hydrothermally deposited CM, similar distribution to Au-associated sulfides suggests co-genesis.•δ13C values indicated organic origin for both CMker and CMfd.•Laser Raman of mixed types can complicate CM classification, and Raman calculated formation temperatures should be used with caution.
