•rHDL inactivates lipid hydroperoxides (LOOH) in a dose- and time-dependent manner.•ApoA-I/lipid ratio is directly related to LOOH-inactivating capacity of rHDL.•ApoA-I/lipid ratio is directly related to rHDL-induced cholesterol efflux via ABCA1.•Oxidation of apoA-I Met112 residue decreases LOOH-inactivating capacity of rHDL.•Oxidation of apoA-I Met112 residue increases cholesterol efflux to rHDL via ABCA1.
