Poster PresentationObjectiveTo improve nurse knowledge of the expanded recommendations by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) regarding safe sleep and to demonstrate this behavior while patients are in the inpatient setting.DesignKnowledge assessment of safe sleep practices recommended by the AAP in inpatient pediatric nursing staff utilizing a cohort design.SampleForty newborns less than the age of one.MethodsInformal rounding was conducted on 40 newborns less than the age of one. The environment was assessed using a safe sleep checklist based upon the AAP guidelines for a safe sleeping environment. An educational program was then assigned to the inpatient nurses on the pediatric unit. Upon completion of the intervention phase, post rounding was performed using the same rounding tool.Implementation StrategiesThe plan-do-study-act (PDSA) model was utilized to effectively change the practices and knowledge of inpatient pediatric nurses regarding the prevention of sudden infant death syndrome.ResultsImprovements were seen in all areas except breastfeeding and supervised tummy time. However, the only improvement statistically significant was the number of patients with soft objects and loose bedding.Conclusion/Implications for Nursing PracticeEducation for inpatient nurses may improve behaviors for safe sleep practices in inpatients. As a result of the project, a policy was developed and provided to further reinforce appropriate behaviors, which may also further improve compliance.
