•The Ni/Pd foam cathode exhibited p-CNB removal efficiency of >99%.•Aniline formation efficiency and stability of Ni/Pd foam cathode are high.•The synergistic effect of 3D Ni foam and Pd enhance the dechlorination of p-CNB.•Current density, acidic condition and electrolyte concentration are optimized.
