•Biogenic Mn oxides (BMOs) sequester La3+ ions.•Exogenous Mn2+ significantly competes with La3+ for sorption on BMOs.•Enzymatic Mn(II) oxidation reduces sorption competition by Mn2+ on BMOs.•Enzymatic Mn(II) oxidation provides new sorption sited for La3+on BMOs.•Enzymatically active BMOs maintain high La3+ sequestration efficiency.
