Abstract
I am very proud to introduce this 75th anniversary issue of the Archives of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine to our readers. On behalf of the current editorial board and staff, I wish to personally thank everyone who has contributed to the success of this journal during the past 75 years. The Archives has provided our colleagues with the best practical vision of the progress of our specialty for three quarters of a century. In recognition of this milestone, I asked colleagues at Loyola University Medical Center to compare the scientific information contained in 3 papers published in the January 1926 issue with our current knowledge of the conditions discussed in the articles. The January 1926 articles also are reprinted in their entirety in this issue. After reading the Historical Perspective articles, I think you will agree that the progress in scientific advancement since 1926 has been phenomenal.Additionally, former Archives Editor Dr William McClendon has provided us with a history of our journal that is most insightful. This article explains how Dr Ludvig Hektoen and a small group of dedicated pathologists guided the Archives during its first 25 years of existence and also discusses how this journal has evolved throughout the years.I think we will all agree that our wonderful specialty of medicine is progressing at light speed. Where will we be in another 75 years? It certainly is difficult to imagine. But I have the utmost confidence that the people we are training today will guide us through the next 75 years with the same high standards we have experienced in the past. Finally, as part of the College of American Pathologist's continuing commitment to education, I am happy to direct Archives readers to our recently introduced continuing medical education program. Participants in this program can earn continuing medical education credit by completing and returning answer sheets for the Archives Test Your Memory questions. See the Test Your Memory section for more information about how to register for this exciting new program. As always, we welcome your suggestions and comments. Our new e-mail address is Archivepath@lumc.edu. Let us know what you think of this special anniversary issue and the Archives.Kenneth M. Brinkhous, MD, editor of the Archives of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine from 1974 to 1983, passed away December 11, 2000. He was 92.
