•GO was decorated with Fe3O4 nanoparticles in the presence of silane coupling agents.•The Fe3O4–GO hybrid exhibited a homogeneous distribution within epoxy resin.•The Fe3O4–GO/epoxy composites with advanced anticorrosive properties were prepared.•The contribution of Fe3O4–GO hybrid in corrosion process was tentatively investigated.
