•Study of CEA in the treatment of colorectal cancer in private and public hospitals.•Worse 5-year overall survival was associated with higher CEA.•Worse 5-year disease-free survival was associated with higher CEA.•CEA was associated with age, BMI, ASA and tumour stage.•CEA remains a reliable predictor of recurrence and survival in colorectal cancer.
