•The 5-HT2A receptor (5-HT2AR) is a target for consciousness modifying drugs.•The 5-HT2AR modulates cognitive processes involved in executive function.•The 5-HT2AR may mediate prefrontal -subcortical functional coupling.•A model is proposed for 5-HT2AR contribution in these cognitive processes.•It poses an unexploited target for easing attention and impulse control deficits.
