•Social functioning difficulties are a major problem for persons with schizophrenia.•Functional challenges are relatively unresponsive to acute antipsychotic treatment.•Aripiprazole lauroxil every 4 weeks for 12 weeks significantly improved social functioning vs placebo.•Improving social functioning is a suitable target for acutely symptomatic patients.
