•Hydrotreatment of wheat/barley straw bio-oil from ablative fast pyrolysis affords novel refinery feeds.•The deoxygenation degree of bio-oils rapidly assessed by PCA applied to their FTIR spectra.•Nearly complete deoxygenation achieved at 360 °C and 8 MPa in a single stage hydrotreatment.
