•A multi-objective cyclic green inventory routing problem (MOCGIRP) is proposed.•The MOCGIRP is solved using the proposed discrete multi-swarm PSO.•Inventory management contributions to total cost and emission rates are analyzed.•Routings with single and multiple tours are analyzed.•Managerial insights are given through numerical examples.
