Development of highly efficient, glazed PVT collectors with overheating protection to increase reliability and enhance energy yields

•High temperatures in efficient PVT collectors impose challenges on material and design.•Overheating protection is a suitable approach to reduce temperature load and enhance electrical yields.•Venting the collector reduces stagnation temperatures from 148 °C to 102 °C.•The novel switchable film insulation achieves an unprecedented heat loss range with stagnation temperatures of 87 °C.
