•The mechanical properties of oil well cement were improved by the hybrid NS/GO.•The effect of hybrid NS/GO on hydration and pozzolanic reaction degree was discussed.•The hybrid NS/GO could refine the pores of the matrix.•The hybrid structure was beneficial for nano-materials’ dispersity in alkaline cement.
