•Ultrasound and microwave are used to synthesize nano-sized MOF-5.•MOF-5 nanoparticles have high purity and sizes in the range of 20–80 nm.•MOF-5 with 20–30 nm in size are homogenously distributed in PEO electrolyte.•Nano-sized MOF-5 crystals can be used as nanofillers in polymer nanocomposites.
