Abstract
Background: The nutritional prognostic index of Onodera is determined by the use of serum albumin and total lymphocyte count. Biochemical indicators, such as the total lymphocyte count (CTL) and serum albumin, are used as nutritional indices and have been shown to be valid and reliable. The objective of this study is to evaluate the nutritional risk through the nutritional prognostic index of Onodera in patients with pancreatic, hepatic and bile duct tumors. Material and methods: We evaluated a 177 patients who entered the oncology surgery area at the National Cancer Institute of Mexico City were evaluated. The nutritional prognostic index of Onodera was used to determine the risk of malnutrition. The variables to be considered were: albumine, CTL. Severe malnutrition (albumin <2.5 g/dl, CTL <800 cells/mm3), moderate malnutrition (albumin <3 g/dl, CTL <1200 cells/mm3), mild malnutrition (albumin <3.5) were taken as CTL cut-off points. g/dl, CTL <1600 cells/mm3), normal (albumin <3.5 g/dL, CTL <5000 cells/mm3) and lymphocytosis (> 4999 cells/mm3). Results: The results of the onodera prognostic index report that 49.7% of the evaluated patients present high nutritional risk using serum albumin and total lymphocyte count as predictors. Conclusions: A large number of the evaluated patients present a high nutritional risk referred by the onodera prognostic index, the type of tumor that refers more cases of high nutritional risk is pancreatic cancer.
