•The maximum bio-oil yield from tobacco stem is higher than that from tobacco leaf.•Heterocyclic compounds and acids are the most abundant substances in bio-oils.•Oil from tobacco leaf contains more aroma components with a sweet or tobacco flavor.•Most aroma components are obtained at a temperature below 350 °C.
