Effect of a novel compound on leaching process of weathered crust elution-deposited rare earth ore

•A novel compound was applied to leach the weathered crust elution-deposited rare earth ore.•An enhanced leaching rate of rare earth was achieved.•The leaching of aluminum was significantly inhibited by the novel compound.•The leaching kinetic equations of rare earth and aluminum by the novel compound were established.
