•Ligand-free gold nanoparticles are directly prepared on mesoporous carbon.•Micro/mesopores serve as templating scaffold to confine the growth of gold nanoparticles.•Smaller gold nanoparticles (1–3 nm) shows higher CO2RR activity.•Ligand on gold nanoparticles shows a dual effect in terms of an improved stability but a lowered activity.
