Protective effect of crocin against the declining of high spatial frequency-based visual performance in mice

•The cone-rich macular-based vision degeneration is a major cause of vision loss.•Crocin can improve the high spatial frequency-based vision via inhibiting the retinal Müller cell hypertrophic gliosis and reducing photoreceptor damage in vivo.
