Diffusion and swelling in a bio-elastic cylinder

•Liquid diffusion in biological tissue is analyzed in the presence of general boundary conditions.•The results demonstrate that diffusion and swelling have a dramatic effect on mechanical response.•A simple axisymmetric problem is considered.
