Elucidating the developmental trajectories of GABAergic cortical interneuron subtypes

•Diverse subtypes of GABAergic interneurons (INs) have non-cortical ventral origins.•INs are mostly derived from the medial and caudal ganglionic eminences (MGE and CGE).•Pvalb, Sst and Vip, Reln subtypes of INs are derived from the MGE and CGE, respectively.•Lineage-selective transcriptional programs allow MGE- and CGE-derived IN differentiation.•Efforts to elucidate the developmental fate-restrictions and trajectories of INs.
