Abstract
•Effect of CMC addition on PM emissions during biomass combustion was investigated.•CMC combustion emits large amount of PM due to the formation of NaOH and Na2CO3.•The influence of CMC is linked to the content and chemical composition of fuel ash.•Mixing of rice husk or Si-rich minerals with biomass can reduce PM emission issues.
