•This review gives the details of the scientific attempts made world over for understanding the mechanism governing alternate bearing phenomenon in perennial fruit crops.•The knowledge available could be used for identification of suitable recombinants and hybrids in early nursery stage•Applying physiological and molecular basis governing alternate bearing phenomenon assisting plant breeders by harnessing precision breeding tools in crop improvement. genome editing etc., leading to development of regular bearing genotypes.•Further, coorthologus and orthologus gene statistics has showed the homogeneity in different fruit crops.
