Efficient capture of actinides from strong acidic solution by hafnium phosphonate frameworks with excellent acid resistance and radiolytic stability

•The rare case of hafnium phosphonate frameworks used as actinides sorbents was presented.•Th(IV) and U(VI) were efficiently captured from moderate acidic solution.•239Pu and 237Np were extracted from strong acidic solution by MOFs for the first time.•Unexpected sorption performance enhancement by high-dose γ-rays irradiation was discovered.
