•Clipping, crimping and heat shrinking of longitudinal fins onto tubes tested.•Testing with thermal cycling in air and in salt conducted.•Heat shrinking not stable under thermal cycling.•Clipping maintains good thermal contact but is weaker than crimping.•Crimping is a very strong bond but does not maintain contact over the fin length.
