•Under trellis cover crop (UTCC) reduced vegetative growth of excessive vigorous vines.•UTCC increased total soluble solids and anthocyanin concentration in grapes.•Independently from vine vigor, UTCC strongly reduced bunch rot incidence.•Seasonal variations in water status may affect disease susceptibility at harvest.
