Prescribed burning reduces the abundance of den sites for a hollow-using mammal in a dry forest ecosystem

•Individuals of the small marsupial, Antechinus flavipes, use multiple den sites.•Habitat structures used most frequently for dens (large trees, logs) are rare.•A single prescribed burn of low coverage (40–50%) removed 31% of known dens.•The loss of hollows in trees and logs may also affect other hollow-using species.•We recommend retaining patches of long-unburned forest to ensure suitable habitat.
