Assessing the adaptability of alien (Larix kaempferi) and native (Pinus armandii) tree species at the Baiyunshan Mountain, central China

•Climate-growth response of two different trees species (native and alien) was investigated in humid regions of central China.•Similar growth process and different climatic responses are found between the two trees species.•Growth decline of the alien trees species in 2004 was caused by warming induced drought.
