•Methylene blue (MB) shows high inhibition efficiency in 1 M HCl.•Adsorption mechanism changes from physical to chemical with increasing MB concentration.•New parameter of pitting active energy CAE was proposed.•CAE initially increases when follows physical adsorption, then decreases when chemisorption mechanism was obeyed.
