•We examined secondary task processing during highly automated and manual driving.•One group of drivers had a preview of the system availability during the drive.•Drivers were free to reject a given texting task (enabling self-regulation).•Drivers focused their task engagement on sections of highly automated driving.•Drivers tended to complete accepted tasks, even in take-over situations.
