Modelling grate combustion of biomass and low rank fuels with CFD application

•A reactor cascade model is used to model fixed bed combustion.•The model reproduces experimental key quantities correctly.•The fixed bed results are transformed numerically to continuous grate combustion.•Validation is done by comparison to a pilot scale grate combustor (for biomass)•The CFD application is demonstrated for industrial scale facilities.
