•We performed a systematic review of human imaging studies on fear extinction.•Animals studies have provided insight into the neural circuitry of fear extinction.•Translation to the human extinction circuit using neuroimaging is not straightforward.•There seems partial overlap between animal and human networks at a macro scale.•Current imaging techniques do not allow comparisons at a micro scale.
