Episcleral Plaque Brachytherapy for Diffuse Choroidal Hemangioma: Case Report, the Utility of MRI, and Review of the Literature

Diffuse choroidal hemangioma is a rare, benign vascular eye tumor that typically presents as part of Sturge-Weber syndrome. The tumor is clinically ill-defined with indistinct margins and blends subtly with the choroid. Associated exudative retinal detachment is a common complication that is reversible with management. External beam radiation therapy has traditionally been used for the treatment of diffuse choroidal hemangioma. There have been limited reports on the use of radioactive eye plaque brachytherapy. One necessary component of eye plaque brachytherapy is proper target delineation. Unfortunately, due to the tumor’s clinical presentation, it can be difficult to delineate the treatment target with traditional imaging modalities, especially in the case of retinal detachment.
