The South Um Mongul Cu-Mo-Au prospect in the northern Eastern Desert of Egypt: Tonian porphyry-style mineralization with an Ediacaran hydrothermal iron oxide overprint

•The South of Mongul Prospect represents superimposed porphyry systems.•Tonian continental arc dacite hosts a standard Cu-Mo porphyry system.•Hydrothermal iron oxide-barite related to Ediacaran post-collisional monzogranite.•Abundance of iron oxides does not reflect the presence of an IOCG system.•Gold is related mainly to the oxidation of chalcopyrite inclusions in magnetite.
