•Fifteen USGS-gaged watersheds in the Southern Blue Ridge Mountains were analyzed.•Watershed geomorphology explains 40–50% of the variance in regional stormflow.•Continental-scale teleconnections explain the majority of inter-annual variance.•Land cover is only important when in the context of soil parent material.
