•The hydrodynamics of a two-zone gas-solid fluidized bed has been investigated.•An alternative fluctuating trend was observed for the bed surface height.•Three different nozzle tip configurations have been studied.•Both coupled PIV-DIA and CFD techniques have been used in this study.
