•Initial Si deposition on Pt(111) leads to 1D Si chains embedded into Pt.•Si chains are lifted towards silicide clusters on the Pt(111) surface by 1 L CO.•Embedded Si chains can be protected airtight by 1ML of BN.•Si likely penetrates an intact h-BN monolayer on Pt(111).
