Abstract
Proper bowel cleansing before colonoscopy is an important factor to increase the detection rate of lesions. The development of low volume PEG-Asc has reduced the dosage of previous bowel preparation agent, but it still presents a great deal of discomfort to patients. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy and complications between PEG-Asc 2L and PEG-Asc 1L with additional bisacodyl suppository. This is a single-center, randomized, prospective, pilot study. We identified 82 participants who were scheduled for colonoscopy between August and October 2017. All patients were randomly assigned to PEG-Asc 2L group or PEG-Asc 1L with additional bisacoddyl suppository group. The efficacy of bowel cleansing was assessed by the Boston Bowel Preparation Scale (BBPS), and the side effects were investigated with questionnaires. There was no statistically significant difference in age, sex, underlying bowel disease, indication of colonoscopy, cecal insertion time, and colon polyp detection rate between the two groups. The total BBPS was 8.12 ± 1.07 and 7.87 ± 0.98 in PEG-Asc 2L group and PEG-Asc 1L with bisacodyl suppository group, respectively (p=0.291). The BBPS of ascending colon was 2.56 ± 0.50 and 2.36 ± 0.54 in each group (p=0.09). The BBPS of transverse colon was 2.88 ± 0.32 and 2.87 ± 0.34 in each group (p=0.87). The BBPS of descending colon was 2.67 ± 0.47 and 2.64 ± 0.49 in each group (p=0.75). And, the occurrence of complications including abdominal fullness, pain, nausea and vomiting was not statistically different between the two groups. Sleep disturbance (p=0.00) and anal region discomfort (p=0.00) were more frequently reported in PEG-Asc 2L group. PEG-Asc 1L with bisacodyl suppository agent showed the equivalent effect on bowel cleansing outcome compared to PEG-Asc 2L, and the method was easy and less uncomfortable. Therefore, PEG-Asc with additional bisacodyl suppository is expected to be a new alternative bowel cleansing agent and increase the accessibility of colonoscopy.View Large Image Figure ViewerDownload Hi-res image Download (PPT)
