The androgen model of suicide completion

•Hitherto, no objective markers, either alone or in combination, can reliably predict who will complete a suicide.•The new ideation-to-completion framework suggests focusing on the transition from suicidal ideation to suicide completion.•Organizational and activational androgen effects facilitate suicide completion (= androgen model of suicide completion).•Prenatal androgen-related neurodevelopmental aspects may contribute to the risk of suicide completion later in life.•Maternal behaviors during pregnancy influence prenatal androgen load and possibly later suicide risk of the offspring.
