•The study explores the role of motivation on creativity within and outside school.•Openness trait and originality in a divergent thinking task are also analyzed.•Interaction between openness and intrinsic motivation is the strongest predictor.•This interaction predicted both outside and inside school creative achievement.•Originality only predicted outside school creative achievement.
