Contribution of exogenous enzymes to potentiate the removal of antibiotic growth promoters in poultry production

•A description of the deleterious consequences of the removal of antibiotic growth promoters from poultry production systems is described.•The potential for exogenous feed enzymes to partially displace antibiotic growth promoters is discussed.•Gut health of poultry is described based around several key pillars including digestive, physiological, microbiological and immunological.•The opportunity to intervene in these central pillars of gut health with exogenous enzymes is considered.
