Effect Of Longitudinal And Shear Stress On Photonic Crystal Based Ring Resonator

The paper analyzes the response of a silicon photonic crystal lattice under longitudinal and shear stresses. With the aid of a ring resonator -based structure, a shift of resonant wavelength from 1.67 mu m to 1.56 mu m is achieved for a lattice elongation of 0.04 mu m. A novel method of characterizing shear strain is considered, leading to an attenuation of 3 dB for a doubling of strain displacement. Such behavior of the lattice can be used for applications involving variable optical attenuators(VOA), accelerometers and similar devices.
