•Nanostructured Pt/xLa2O3-Al2O3 was studied for DRM reaction.•Effect of the lanthana content on the textural and structural properties.•27Al MAS NMR, CO DRIFTS, XRD, N2 adsorption isotherms, TPR and Raman and FTIR spectroscopy.•Accessibility of the Pt species promoted CH4 and CO2 by adding a 12 wt% of La2O3.•Ability of [LaPtOx]Pto-like entity to eliminate the coke.
