Differences in asphalt binder variability quantified through traditional and advanced laboratory testing

•Asphalt binder (AB) variability could induce uncertainty in the behaviour of asphalt mixtures.•Variability of a Pen 60–70 AB was quantified through both traditional and advanced asphalt testing.•Advanced testing captured higher variability than traditional testing used during production.•Results encourage the need of new strategies to reduce current AB variability.
