Relationships between shelter effects and optical porosity: A meta-analysis for tree windbreaks

•Shelter effects showed linear relationships with porosity based on global data.•Relationships changed with external characteristics of tree windbreaks.•Optimal porosity, 20–40%, was only found for tree windbreaks with one row.•Other indices to express 3-D structure should be used in wide tree windbreaks.
