On real-time risk evaluation of accident in water quality control zone

•A method of time-varying index and weight was proposed to evaluate the real-time risk.•The risk evaluation index is 2.86 with the traditional evaluation.•The real-time risk evaluation index is between 1.89 and 3.45.•The real-time index risk evaluation reflects the temporal evolution of pollution risk.
