•Efficient degradation of CAP could be achieved by solar/Fe2+/PS system.•Both HO and SO4− existed in the process with HO contributing more.•The effects of co-existing matrix components on CAP removal were evaluated.•The main factor affecting the removal of CAP in actual wastewater was colloids.•Oxidation pathways were proposed for CAP degradation by solar/Fe2+/PS process.
