摘要

•The effect of sub-monolayer coverage of Eu on Ge(001) substrates using molecular beam epitaxy is reported.•Surface reconstruction using a combination of in-situ RHEED and XPS, ex-situ electron STEM microscopy and density functional theory is explored.•We find the Zintl mechanism of charge transfer in many way similar to Sr on SI (001).
