•A novel attempt was made to simulate the inundation patterns of two potholes within a farm field in Central Iowa, USA using AnnAGNPS.•AnnAGNPS is capable of simulating the variations in the water depth of the potholes.•In its current form, the model is not capable of simulating pothole volume variations.
